Welcome

A MESSAGE FROM EUCAP PRESIDENT, JEANNINE ZOPPI , Ph.D.

Dear EUCAP Colleague,

The end of the year, like any milestone, is a time of looking back and of looking ahead.  I have been honored to serve as President of EUCAP during this past year. It has been an exciting and rewarding experience to be part of a dynamic, warm, and cohesive group. I have been privileged to work with a talented EUCAP Board, whose dedication and creativity has made my job as President easy. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Board members for their unique contributions during this past year. >> Read More

 KNOW YOUR COLLEAGUE

We want to thank all our members who participated in our inaugural Know Your Colleague Program. These practice synposes were distributed to EUCAP members via email.  We have received much positive feedback from the membership.  We encourage more EUCAP members to publicize their practices through Know Your Colleague and invite all of you to write a description (250-500 words) of your practice, training and specialties.  Please submit these to Know Your Colleague coordinator Jeffrey Singer at drsinger@morrispsych.com. Don't hesitate to contact either Jeff or me at jzoppi1@hotmail.com if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions.

Book Group

On Sunday December 6, 2009 EUCAP's Book Club meet at the home of Lisa Greenberg, Ph.D. and discussed Irvin Yalom's book "Staring at the Sun- Overcoming the Terror of Death". The topic of death anxiety was a thought-provoking one and led to an intense discussion about how this deep fear impacts on us personally and in our interactions with our patients.  Thank you Lisa for hosting this event.

New Date and Time!:
Our next book club will take place on February 21, 2010 from 11-1 at the home of Jeannine Zoppi. We will be discussing the book "Nudge- Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth & Happiness" by Richard H. Thaler & Cass R. Sunstein.

Movie Club

EUCAP's inaugural movie club took place on January 17, 2010 from 11-1 at the home of Jeannine Zoppi.  While enjoying some light refreshments, we discussed the movie "Marvin's Room".  We explored the themes of sibling relationships, mother/son relationships and how families and individuals cope with caretaking, illness and death.  It was a nice opportunity on a cold and rainy Sunday to socialize and network with other EUCAP members.

Our next movie club will take place on Sunday March 14, 2010 from 11-1.  We will be discussing the movie "Good Will Hunting".  I hope more of you will join us.  It will be a great opportunity for you to connect with other EUCAP members in a small group setting to network, socialize, discuss psychological issues and eat yummy snacks.

ABOUT US

The Essex-Union County Association of Psychologists (EUCAP) is an organization of psychologists who live and/or work in the Essex and Union County region of New Jersey. EUCAP is an affiliate of the New Jersey Psychological Association (NJPA). Members include licensed psychologists in private practice, those with psychology permits or practicing psychology without licenses but in exempt settings, psychology professors, and graduate psychology students.

HISTORY

In 1958, sixteen psychologists collaborated to form the Essex County Society of Clinical Psychologists in Private Practice. This long title was soon abbreviated to "Triple P." In 1981, the organization was renamed The Essex County Psychological Association. However, membership grew to include surrounding locations, including Union, Morris, Middlesex, and Somerset Counties, requiring yet another name change to the Society of Psychologists in Private Practice ("S Triple P"). By 2007, with the formation of regional affiliate groups throughout the state, our membership continued to draw upon psychologists primarily in the two original counties, Essex and Union. With membership expansion that now includes associate and student members, as well as those working in agencies or schools, the organization was renamed the Essex-Union County Association of Psychologists (EUCAP).

PURPOSES

EUCAP's purposes include:
Promoting and supporting psychology as a profession,
Supporting NJPA in its mission, purposes and programs,
Educating and encouraging EUCAP members to support the political, legislative, and ethical initiatives of NJPA and the American Psychological Association (APA),
Promoting the science of psychology as a means of enhancing human welfare,
Providing continuing education programs for psychologists,
Fostering amiable relationships among psychologists and members of other professions,
Engaging in other business and professional activities, including those that are calculated, directly or indirectly, to promote the interests of the organization and its members, and
Reaching out to the general community and providing services of benefit to those who seek our help.

BENEFITS AND OPPORTUNITIES

EUCAP membership facilitates professional activities in many different ways that address both personal and professional needs. Meetings include presentations on clinical and practice issues, and allow for networking and socializing with colleagues. As a small, member-friendly organization we offer several events and activities for colleagues and guests.

EUCAP offers opportunities to meet with other psychologists with similar interests. Members can share ideas and information about clinical issues with colleagues, learn about relevant local, state, and national issues, and become active in several ways to address personal and professional needs.

EUCAP invites all members to attend social and professional meetings and events, join committees, and participate in projects pertinent to practice concerns. Other benefits include receipt of regular news updates and action alerts, website access, and publication of individual practice information in a biannual directory.

All members have the opportunity to help shape the organization to better meet our needs and goals. We encourage members to participate actively in EUCAP by joining a committee, offering ideas for programs and projects, and becoming a member of the Executive Board, in addition to attending meetings.
